article expounds the experimental tests carried out on hymenoptera: Bombus
terrestris
(“Bumblebee”) and on Diptera: Calliphora vomitoria. They fly perfectly well
in a very
thin atmosphere, with only the partial pressure of water vapour (13 mb,
equivalent t o
98.7% of the normal atmospheric pressure: 1013 mb, at the room temperature
of 13ºC), so
that the insect becomes no deformed. The insect maintains its flight, even
when hovering,
for a maximum of 2 minutes. The test can often be repeated after the insect
is recovered
from anoxia.
